Oh Christmas Tree…

I couldn’t help but smile when I saw this post on Facebook. Of course I felt bad for my friend for a brief moment, but then I just had to smile again!

I wonder often about this holiday season, it’s real meaning and how it’s gotten so out of control. I can’t even point a finger, I’m totally part of the madness! Not so much shopping and more shopping (although being a first time grandma I couldn’t help myself) but the whole crazy package of what we do to “celebrate” the season… All to often the “real” meaning of the season comes in last! Santa seems to be first for most, and again I have to admit I’ve been caught up in all the tinsel and lights!

I wonder about my own childhood, the baby Jesus, church and all our traditions… As I’ve aged I wonder more and more about the Christmas season. It’s certainly not like I remember as a child and now there are little grandchildren to create memories for…

So as the new traditions are created, perhaps for dessert on Christmas a birthday cake for the baby Jesus this year… In Addition, for me there is something so magical about Santa and Rudolf with his nose so bright… My own childhood comes alive!

But let’s remember what’s truly important…

Teaching children how to give and not just receive should be a priority… A great lesson to tie Santa and Gods gift of his son the baby Jesus during this Christmas Season.

And please remember to tie down your Christmas tree! Oh Christmas Tree!

The Thanksgiving Table…

A table and its memories… Had me wondering this Thanksgiving morning. My table is set, the turkey is prepared and company invited…

As we sit around “the table” for yet another Thanksgiving dinner I can’t help but wonder about all the family and friends who have eaten at this same table for the past eighty years…most no longer with us… Thankful for the wonderful memories my mother and grandmother created for us… Thankful for my children and their children… Very thankful for my father who may eat his last Thanksgiving dinner this year at the very same table he probably had his first Thanksgiving dinner with my mother…

No matter what maybe going on in the world today, we ALL as Americans have so much to be thankful for… As you count your blessings today at your Thanksgiving table… Stop for a moment and wonder… Who ate there before you, and give thanks for all they may have brought to “The Thanksgiving table….”

Happy Easter

As I’ve aged I find holidays more confusing… There are the true meaning of the holidays and then there are all the holiday traditions encouraged by years of marketing.

So here we are yet again about to celebrate Easter. A Christian holiday celebrating Christ and his resurrection, the true meaning of Easter and yet…
Happy Easter is all you hear, chocolate and bunnies are all we see… As I was told several times yesterday “Happy Easter” it made me wonder… What most people were celebrating, including myself!

I googled where the word Easter came from, here’s what I found…

“The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time.”

And honestly it want on and on…

As we all know, Christians celebrate Easter as the day Christ has risen…

Here’s what History.com has to say about the Christian aspect…

“Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. And then there are the candies, (peeps, jelly beans and chocolate bunnies to be exact) baskets, eggs, the Easter Bunny himself and by the way over 90 million chocolate bunnies are made every year…
